Windows require maintenance to ensure they continue to look good and functioning properly. Even windows such as vinyl, aluminum and fiberglass which are billed as “maintenance free” require periodic upkeep to prolong their life and make sure they continue functioning properly. Routine window upkeep should include cleaning and maintaining both the glass and the frame. Without proper maintenance, windows will not function properly and will need to be replaced more often which is expensive.
Window Frame Maintenance
Window frames should be thoroughly cleaned inside and outside at least annually but ideally more often especially if they are exposed to a lot of dirt, dust and moisture. A good all purpose cleaner and cloth or sponge and brush work fine. If a window opens, pay extra attention to the track of a sliding window, the crank and glide of a casement window and the locking mechanisms for all windows. If not cleaned regularly, dirt and dust may cause the window to not function properly. Additionally, dirt may prevent the windows from making a proper seal allowing hot and cold air in and out of your home. Dirt and dust can also prevent a window from locking properly leaving your home unsecured.
Maintenance of Window Glass
Periodic cleaning of the interior and outside glass in your windows is recommended. Even new replacement windows will look terrible with the glass is dirty. How often you clean the interior glass is up to you and varies based on the what room a window is in, whether people smoke in the home, etc. The exterior glass is exposed to contaminants including, dirt, smog, bird droppings, acid rain and other environmental elements.
Contaminants become harder to get off the longer they are left on the glass. Heat and cold bond contaminants to the glass and in some cases becoming permanently attached to the glass. Contaminants which are left on the glass can cause permanent etching of the glass. Window cleaner or dish soap and a little elbow grease are all that is needed if windows are cleaned periodically. For more stubborn contaminants a non-scratching scouring pad helps.

Some casement windows are pushed open and closed manually using a handle, but the majority use a hand crank, which is typically positioned on the bottom of the window frame. Casement windows offer large, continuous expanses of glass because there is only one sash. Compared to other types of windows, casement windows are the best at preventing air infiltration when closed. If you have any questions about the cost of casement windows, contact Marvin Canada.
